A fresh storm is brewing in Nairobi’s political circles after reports emerged that at least 20 Members of the County Assembly (MCAs) allied to the ruling United Democratic Alliance (UDA) allegedly held a secret meeting with Democratic Congress Party (DCP) leader Rigathi Gachagua.
The agenda of the meeting, according to insiders, was to draft an impeachment motion against Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja while plotting a possible defection from UDA to DCP.
Secret Meeting and Alleged Plans
The alleged meeting, which reportedly took place last week, has ignited speculation about the growing rifts within UDA’s Nairobi wing.
Sources indicate that the MCAs, dissatisfied with Sakaja’s leadership style and delivery record, were mobilized by the DCP leader, who is said to be eyeing influence in Nairobi politics ahead of the 2027 elections.
According to those familiar with the plans, the impeachment motion against Sakaja is not anchored on any proven misconduct. Instead, the push is largely viewed as a politically motivated move, with the DCP keen to front its own candidate in the next gubernatorial race.

Rare Support for Sakaja
Despite the mounting pressure, Governor Sakaja has received an unexpected show of support from a surprising quarter.
Former Principal Secretary Irungu Nyakera, who also serves as the Nairobi Patron of the DCP — the very party associated with Gachagua — came out in defense of the embattled governor.
Speaking on Monday, Nyakera acknowledged that while he would politically benefit from Sakaja’s removal, he could not back what he termed as an undemocratic attempt to oust him.
“While I would naturally stand to benefit if Governor Sakaja were impeached, I do not support it. Nairobians freely chose him in 2022, and democracy demands that we respect that choice, even when it proves difficult. I urge Sakaja to drop the PR and theatrics and use his remaining two years to deliver on the promises he made,” Nyakera said.

His remarks underscored a rare twist in the unfolding drama, highlighting the deep divisions even within circles aligned to the DCP.
Impeachment Motion
The developments come against the backdrop of a formal impeachment push launched by Nairobi MCAs over the weekend.
On Sunday, a section of ward representatives from both UDA and the opposition Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) announced a bipartisan effort to remove Sakaja from office.
By evening, at least 70 signatures had been collected out of the 123 required to table the motion.
The meeting, held at a private residence in Nairobi, brought together MCAs who accused the governor of poor service delivery and sidelining the wards in key county decisions.
Among the grievances raised were:
Failure to deliver on 2022 campaign pledges
Stalled Ward Development Fund projects
Delayed bursary allocations
Marginalization of ward-level priorities
This rare unity between UDA and ODM MCAs has been interpreted as a major setback for Sakaja, who is barely halfway through his first term at City Hall.
What Next for Sakaja?
Governor Sakaja now faces a defining moment in his political career. While he still enjoys pockets of support, the growing coalition against him poses a real threat to his leadership.
