A Night in Kisumu City: My AfroExchange Experience with Johnnie Walker

There is a certain magic in waking up early on a Saturday, knowing you are about to leave the familiar buzz of Nairobi for a city that beats to its own rhythm.

As a Lifestyle Editor, I have attended countless events—but this one felt different even before it began. By 11:00am, my team and I were airborne, slicing through the morning clouds on our way to Kisumu City for the Johnnie Walker AfroExchange.

A quick in-and-out trip: land, cover the event from 6pm, and catch the 8:30am flight back home on Sunday. Short, sweet, and—though we did not know it yet—completely magical.

Kisumu greeted us with warm air and warmer smiles. After settling in, the countdown to AfroExchange at Black Pearl began.

When evening arrived, the lakeside city seemed to transform—lights sharpened, energy rose, and the unmistakable pulse of creativity filled the air.

Johnnie Walker had curated an immersive experience that felt less like an event and more like stepping into a living, breathing celebration of African artistry. AfroExchange brought together music, art, and culture with a vibrancy that only Kisumu could hold.

The night officially kicked off with DJ Cibin, who wasted no time setting the tone. His high-energy beats pulled people toward the dancefloor, sparking the kind of collective excitement you don’t have to describe—you feel it.

MC Machupa followed, keeping the crowd engaged with his dynamic performance and infectious charisma.

And then came the moment everyone was waiting for. Khaligraph Jones took the stage, closing the night with a show-stopping performance that had guests on their feet, rapping along, and fully immersed in the music.

Watching the crowd erupt during his set made it clear why he remains one of the region’s most magnetic performers.

But AfroExchange wasn’t just about the music. One of the highlights was the interactive arts section—local installations and contemporary pieces that showcased the richness of Kenya’s creative landscape.

Guests moved through the space slowly, almost reverently, taking in the artwork as part of the larger tapestry of the night. It was creativity popping in real time—exactly in line with the unstoppable spirit of AfroExchange, where beats drop, cities hop and creativity pops.

By the time the event wrapped, AfroExchange had successfully done what it set out to do: create a platform where people could lose themselves in creativity, connect with culture, and celebrate self-expression.

Johnnie Walker continues to champion such experiences—moments that linger long after the lights dim.

And as we boarded the Sunday morning flight back to Nairobi, slightly tired but deeply inspired, one thing was clear: although our stay in Kisumu was brief, AfroExchange made every second sparkle.
