Activist Boniface Mwangi was arrested on Saturday, July 19, 2025, at his residence in Lukenya, Machakos County, by officers from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI).
In a statement released by the DCI, Mwangi’s arrest is linked to allegations of facilitating terrorist activities during the anti-government protests that took place on June 25, 2025.
According to the DCI, the arrest followed investigations that pointed to Mwangi’s possible involvement in coordinating or supporting subversive acts during the protests. Detectives recovered critical items during the operation at his home, including two mobile phones, a laptop, and several notebooks believed to contain key information.
Following the arrest, Mwangi was escorted to Mageuzi Hub—his office located on Rose Avenue in Hurlingham, Nairobi—where a more extensive search was conducted.

During the search, officers reportedly recovered:
Nine assorted external hard drives
Two laptops
Company seals for Brave Media Ltd and Courage Ltd
A company stamp
Six cheque books
Copies of stamp duty documents
Two unused tear gas canisters
One 7.62mm blank round
These items, according to the DCI, are being treated as potential evidence in the ongoing investigation. Authorities allege that some of the recovered materials could be linked to planned or previously executed acts that fall under the scope of terrorism facilitation.

Mwangi is currently being held at Pangani Police Station, where he is undergoing processing. The DCI confirmed that he will be arraigned in court on Monday, July 21, 2025, where he will face formal charges related to facilitation of terrorist acts and unlawful possession of ammunition.
The arrest has triggered widespread public attention and speculation, with many Kenyans and civil society groups closely watching the developments. Mwangi, known for his vocal criticism of government excesses and human rights advocacy, has been a consistent face in Kenya’s protest and reform movements.
As the nation awaits his arraignment, several human rights organizations and activists have already begun mobilizing support, raising concerns over the nature and timing of the arrest, especially given his longstanding activism.
More updates are expected following his court appearance on Monday.
