Chaos erupted at the Parliament Buildings in Nairobi on Thursday as thousands of mourners pushed their way into the compound to view the body of the late former Prime Minister Raila Amolo Odinga.

The crowd, which had gathered from the early morning hours, overwhelmed security officers as emotions ran high.

Due to growing safety concerns and logistical challenges, organizers were forced to cancel the planned public viewing at Parliament and redirect the body to the Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani.

According to officials from the funeral committee, Parliament grounds proved too small to accommodate the massive turnout.

Senators and Members of Parliament, including Babu Owino, Sylvanus Osoro, Otiende Amollo, Ledama Olekina, and Tom Ojienda, attempted to calm the restless mourners but their efforts were in vain.

“Raila was a movement. Parliament has proved too small for them. That is why we are requesting everyone to move to Kasarani,” Senator Ledama Olekina told the crowd.

At one point, MPs Babu Owino and Otiende Amollo climbed over the Parliament fence to engage directly with the agitated supporters, urging them to maintain peace and proceed to Kasarani.

By midday, the remains of the late Odinga, who passed away earlier this week while receiving treatment in India, were redirected to Kasarani Stadium where the government had made new arrangements for public viewing.

At 11:28 a.m., funeral organizers officially confirmed the change of venue, citing the overwhelming number of mourners. By 12:53 p.m., large crowds had already begun gathering at Kasarani, awaiting the arrival of the motorcade carrying Odinga’s body. President William Ruto arrived at 1:35 p.m., joining other dignitaries and leaders for the solemn occasion.

The shift underscores the deep emotional connection Kenyans have with Raila Odinga, a man whose political career and struggle for democracy inspired generations.
