Chaos, Controversy and Champions: Senegal Lift AFCON 2025 Title

Senegal have been crowned champions of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations after edging tournament hosts Morocco 1–0 in a tense and controversial final decided in extra time.

Midfielder Pape Gueye delivered the decisive moment, firing home a stunning goal just four minutes into extra time to secure Senegal’s second AFCON title and deny Morocco glory on home soil.

The final, played in a charged atmosphere, was overshadowed by dramatic scenes late in regulation time. With the match still goalless in stoppage time, Senegal players briefly refused to continue after Morocco were awarded a contentious penalty following a VAR review. Defender El Hadji Malick Diouf was judged to have fouled Brahim Diaz in the box, prompting furious protests from the Senegalese bench.

Head coach Pape Thiaw attempted to lead his players off the pitch in the 98th minute, visibly angered by referee Jean Jacques Ndala’s decision—especially after Senegal had a goal ruled out moments earlier. Ismaila Sarr appeared to have broken the deadlock from close range, but the effort was disallowed due to a foul by Abdoulaye Seck on Achraf Hakimi.

When play eventually resumed, Diaz stepped up to take the penalty but saw his audacious Panenka attempt brilliantly saved, keeping Senegal alive. Goalkeeper Edouard Mendy, who had briefly walked off the pitch, returned as Sadio Mane urged his teammates to see out the match and restore calm

The victory marks Senegal’s second AFCON triumph, adding to their maiden title in 2021, and confirms their growing dominance in African football. Notably, it is also the second time Senegal have defeated Morocco in AFCON history.

Despite the chaos, Mane emerged as a symbol of leadership and composure. He was seen persuading teammates to return to the pitch and later appealing to Senegalese supporters to remain calm as security forces intervened.

Former Morocco international Hassan Kachloul praised Mane’s actions, saying, “What I liked more than anything was Sadio Mane. He showed what a great man he is. African football—and world football—needed him in that moment.”
