Environment CS Aden Duale has told off Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka over recent remarks that he is the official Opposition leader
Speaking on Thursday, Duale said that the constitution only recognizes the leader of Minority as leader of Opposition.
“In the Constitution of Kenya, the leader of government in Parliament is Kimani Ichung’wah (Majority leader). The leader of the Opposition is Junet Mohamed (Minority leader).
“If you are somewhere else wandering around saying that Baba has gone to the AU and you are leader of the Opposition and your MPs do not even reach twenty, it’s not true,” Duale said.
The CS had accompanied President William Ruto and his deputy Rigathi Gachagua of the thanksgiving ceremony of Treasury CS John Mbadi.
Other Cabinet Secretaries including Hassan Joho (Mining), Alice Wahome (Lands), Opiyo Wandayi (Energy) and Eric Muriithi (Water) were also present.
Duale’s remarks came a few days after Kalonzo announced that he was the official leader of Azimio la Umoja coalition, after Raila launched his bid for the African Union Commission chairmanship.
Kalonzo who convened a press conference coinciding with the State House launch of the bid, on Wednesday said Azimio will remain intact after Raila’s departure.
“Yes, I am ready to be the leader of the Official Opposition. This is the team. You will see the Opposition like never before. We may be light in numbers in Parliament but outside we have the people of Kenya,” he said.
Speaking at the same event as Duale, Junet had also told off Kalonzo over the same.
Junet stated that since the Office of Official Opposition is not enshrined in the Constitution, it would be fair to call the Leader of the Minority Party in the National Assembly the Opposition Leader.
“As it stands now, I am the official opposition leader because I am the Minority Leader and you cannot take away the job God has given me. Those in the opposition should know I am their leader,” he added.
