In a world where leadership often feels distant and disconnected, Hon. Essy Nyaituga Okenyuri is a refreshing reminder that true leadership begins at the grassroots — with empathy, courage, and a deep sense of purpose.
Rising from the quiet village of Kenyenya in Bomachoge Borabu to the chambers of Kenya’s Senate, Essy’s story is one of unwavering resilience and service. She embodies the spirit of a new generation of leaders — bold, compassionate, and deeply rooted in the communities they serve.
A Rising Star in Kenya’s Political Landscape
As a nominated Senator and the visionary founder of the Essy Okenyuri Nyaituga Foundation, she has turned her personal journey into a platform for national transformation.

Whether it’s fighting for the rights of street vendors through progressive legislation, electrifying rural villages in Kisii, or inspiring young girls to dream beyond their circumstances, Hon. Okenyuri is proving that impactful leadership is not about power — it’s about purpose.
Her leadership has not gone unnoticed. In 2025, she was nominated in the Best Nominated Legislator category at the prestigious Bobea Leadership Awards.
According to the awards’ secretariat, a panel of 20 seasoned professionals sifted through thousands of public submissions to select top finalists across all categories.
The awards, which celebrate transformative and values-driven leadership, will culminate in a gala dinner on July 18th at the Movenpick Hotel in Westlands, Nairobi.

From Village Roots to the Senate Floor
Born on February 18, 1991, in Kenyenya Village, Bomachoge Borabu Constituency, Essy’s path to leadership was shaped by strong parental values and a deep commitment to service. Her late father, Henry Anyieni Oketch, was a civil servant, and her mother, Lydia Nyachija Munema, a high school teacher. From these humble beginnings, Essy charted her way through some of Kenya’s top learning institutions, including Tarang’aya Girls Primary School, The Kenya High School, and eventually Maasai Mara University, where she graduated in 2015 with a BSc in Information Sciences.
Her leadership journey began early. In 2015, she made history as the first female Vice President of the Maasai Mara University Student Organisation — a powerful symbol of gender inclusivity in student governance. Her early foray into politics continued in 2017 when she served as the Youth Wing Coordinator for the Jubilee Party in the Gusii Region.
Today, Hon. Okenyuri is a vibrant voice in the Senate, where she has served since 2022. Within the Senate, she holds several influential positions including:
Vice Chairperson, Senate Standing Committee on Trade, Industrialization, and Tourism
Member, Senate Standing Committee on Finance and Budget
Member, Senate Powers and Privileges Committee
Deputy Secretary General, Kenya Young Parliamentarians Association
Organizing Secretary, Kenyan Women Senators Association
Executive Member, Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (Kenya Branch)

Legislating with Purpose: Championing Inclusive Policies
Her role in Parliament is far from ceremonial. In 2023, she sponsored the Street Vendors (Protection of Livelihood) Bill, a landmark piece of legislation aimed at safeguarding the rights and livelihoods of street vendors across the country. The bill proposes a regulatory framework that ensures legal recognition, equitable working environments, and protections against harassment — a bold move toward inclusive economic policy.
Hon. Okenyuri is also known for her advocacy for cultural recognition. She successfully lobbied for the posthumous recognition of Moraa Ngiti by the National Heroes Council, honoring the heroine’s role in the liberation of the Omogusii people.
Her work outside Parliament is equally impactful. Through her Essy Okenyuri Nyaituga Foundation, she has spearheaded numerous programs targeting poverty alleviation, access to education, and community development.

Empowering Communities through Her Foundation
Among the Foundation’s flagship initiatives is Mchakato wa Usomi, a literacy program that has donated over 2,000 books to underprivileged schools. The goal is simple but powerful: to foster a reading culture and open up new worlds for students through knowledge.
In Kisii County, she has championed infrastructure development through the Mwema Village Electrification Project, providing power to over 300 households in Bomachoge Borabu.
Working with the Micro and Small Enterprise Authority, she also led a capacity-building initiative for the Bomachoge Beekeepers Association, expanding their understanding of the bee value chain beyond honey production — an effort geared toward economic sustainability.
Hon. Okenyuri has also taken a stand against Gender-Based Violence (GBV). In 2024, she led a sensitization campaign during the 16 Days of Activism against GBV, aiming to raise awareness and foster safer communities, especially for women and girls in Kisii.
With her firm commitment to inclusion, development, and progress, Hon. Essy Nyaituga Okenyuri exemplifies the new wave of Kenyan leaders who are building bridges between policy and the people. Her journey is not just a personal triumph — it’s a beacon of hope for women, youth, and communities across the nation.
