Kenya Power and Lighting Company (KPLC) has confirmed the tragic death of a security guard stationed at its headquarters, Stima Plaza, following a fatal shooting incident during today’s nationwide protests.
In an official statement released on Wednesday, June 25, 2025, the company identified the deceased as Mr. Fred Wamale Wanyonyi, an employee of Hatari Security, who was on duty at the Kolobot Road entrance of Stima Plaza when he was shot at approximately 4:30 pm.

Mr. Wanyonyi was reportedly caught in the chaos as demonstrators clashed with police outside the utility firm’s premises. He was quickly rushed to Mama Lucy Kibaki Hospital, but was pronounced dead on arrival.
“We are deeply saddened to report that Mr. Fred Wamale Wanyonyi, a security guard stationed at our Stima Plaza headquarters, was fatally shot at the entrance of the building at 4:30 pm this evening during the ongoing protests,” Kenya Power stated.
The company expressed deep regret over the incident and assured the public that it is cooperating with relevant investigative agencies to uncover the exact circumstances surrounding Mr. Wanyonyi’s death.
“We regret the unfortunate death of Mr. Wamale and are working with the relevant investigative organs to unearth the circumstances under which the incident occurred,” read the statement.
Kenya Power also extended heartfelt condolences to the family, friends, and colleagues of the late Mr. Wamale, describing the incident as a painful loss.
“Our heartfelt condolences go out to his family, friends, and colleagues during this difficult time.”
The shooting occurred amid nationwide anti-government protests, largely led by Gen Z demonstrators, which turned chaotic in several parts of Nairobi and other towns. While many of the protests were peaceful, there were increasing reports of police confrontations, abductions, and now, fatalities.
