Kenyans have rallied together, contributing millions of shillings to support the grieving father of the late Albert Ojwang, following a passionate appeal by comedian Eric Omondi.

On Tuesday, renowned Kenyan comedian Eric Omondi took to social media to call upon his followers, popularly known as Team Sisi Kwa Sisi, to support Meshack Opiyo, the father of Albert Ojwang, who recently passed away under controversial circumstances while in police custody.

M-PESA Limit Reached in 11 Minutes

In a powerful demonstration of unity and compassion, Kenyans responded almost immediately to Omondi’s call. Within just 11 minutes, Mr. Opiyo’s M-PESA account hit its transaction limit.

“I want to say a very big thank you and may God bless you. For the overwhelming support you have given to Albert’s family through the father. Just within 11 minutes of me posting that post, Martin Opiyo’s phone was already full. May God bless you!” Omondi shared.

Due to the M-PESA daily transaction limit of KSh500,000 and the maximum account balance of KSh500,000, a second number had to be provided to accommodate the ongoing donations.

“Anybody who sent anything and we have another number which is 0113664965 (MESHACK OPIYO). Let’s keep sending. You can also send to Pochi la Biashara on the other number 0727927898 (NAME: MESHACK OPIYO). Jina bado itasema Meshack Opiyo. God bless 🙏,” Omondi added.

Online Fundraiser Launched at City Mortuary

Omondi initiated the online fundraiser after viewing Albert Ojwang’s body at City Mortuary, moved by the tragedy and the pain of the grieving family.

“How many more must we bury??? TEAM SISI KWA SISI, let’s stand with Baba Albert… Albert has left behind a 3-year-old son. Let’s ensure he never lacks anything. May he grow up to know that his father died a HERO,” he urged in his viral post.

Autopsy Results: Albert Ojwang Died from Assault, Not Suicide

In a new twist to the heartbreaking case, an autopsy conducted on Tuesday revealed that Albert Ojwang did not die by suicide, as initially claimed by police.

The post-mortem, led by Government Pathologist Dr. Bernard Midia, concluded that Ojwang died from severe head injuries, neck compression, and multiple soft tissue injuries, all consistent with assault.

“He had head and neck injuries. There were other multiple injuries consistent with assault,” Dr. Midia stated after the examination.

The findings sharply contradict the earlier police report, which alleged that Ojwang fatally injured himself by banging his head against the wall of a cell at Central Police Station.

“When we examined… the pattern of the injury, especially the trauma on the head…. Hitting against a blunt substance like a wall would have a specific pattern,” explained Dr. Midia.

“But the bleeds we found on the scalp, on the skin of the head, were spaced — including on the face, sides of the head, and the back of the head,” he elaborated.

Dr. Midia, who was joined by family pathologist Dr. Mutuma Zambezi, further emphasized that the widespread nature of the injuries ruled out the possibility of self-infliction.

“When we tie up together with other injuries that are well spread on parts of the body… including the upper limbs and the trunk… then this is unlikely to be a self-inflicted injury,” he concluded.
