Former Nairobi Governor Mike Mbuvi Sonko has pledged a generous Sh400 million reward to the Harambee Stars if they win the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN).

Speaking ahead of Kenya’s opening match against DR Congo, Sonko expressed confidence in the national team’s potential to win the tournament.

“I will support His Excellency, President William Ruto, with Sh400 million. So if Harambee Stars win CHAN 2024, they have a billion shillings. The President will give his Sh600 million and I will give my Sh400 million,” Sonko said.

He challenged the players to give their all on the pitch, highlighting the total potential reward of Sh1 billion—combining his Sh400 million with President Ruto’s earlier promise of Sh600 million.

“I’m not in competition with the head of State. Mine is just to support and motivate the boys to do better. I want our team to win the CHAN tournament. So Harambee Stars, you have a million if you win CHAN,” he added.

Sonko is no stranger to supporting the national team. A few years ago, he gifted Harambee Stars $30,000 (approx. Sh3.87 million) after they qualified for the Africa Cup of Nations.

President Ruto’s Sh600 Million Pledge

President William Ruto set the tone over the weekend with a historic pledge of Sh600 million should Harambee Stars clinch the CHAN 2024 title. He made the announcement during a breakfast meeting with the team at the Pullman Hotel in Nairobi.

Ruto also detailed additional milestone-based incentives:

Sh60 million for reaching the quarterfinals

Sh70 million for advancing to the semifinals

Ksh 1 million per player for every match won

Ksh 500,000 per player for every match drawn

These incentives are designed to boost morale as the team gears up for their Group A matches against DR Congo, Angola, Morocco, and Zambia. Kenya is co-hosting the tournament alongside Uganda and Tanzania.
