Mogadishu City Club (MCC) has issued a public apology following an incident in which a section of its fans was captured disrespecting the Kenyan national flag during a CAF Champions League first leg match against Kenya Police FC.
The match, held on 20 September 2025, was intended to showcase sporting excellence and regional camaraderie, but the actions of a few young fans overshadowed the competition. Footage circulating online showed individuals mishandling the Kenyan flag, sparking outrage among Kenyans and raising questions about respect and sportsmanship in international fixtures.
In a statement, MCC strongly condemned the incident, describing it as “an unfortunate act that has no place in football.” The club extended its “deepest apologies to the Government and People of Kenya”, emphasizing that football should remain a unifying force rooted in respect, love, and harmony.
“Such behavior has no place in football or in the spirit of friendship and sportsmanship that this competition represents. We fully support any appropriate action by the Kenyan authorities against those involved. We also urge our fans—especially the younger generation (Gen Z)—to always respect all nations, their flags, and their people,” read part of the statement from the Mogadishu delegation.

Kenyan Authorities Respond
The incident has drawn the attention of Kenyan authorities. Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja Kiricho directed the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) to immediately probe the matter and ensure that those who disrespected the national flag are identified and apprehended.
IG Kanja stressed that the national flag is a sacred symbol of Kenya’s sovereignty and unity, and any attempt to demean it is unacceptable. He assured Kenyans that investigations would be fast-tracked and action taken to uphold the dignity of the country.
Preserving Unity Through Football
While MCC’s apology has been welcomed by many, the incident has reignited debate about fan conduct in international competitions. Sports analysts argue that CAF and local football federations should reinforce sensitization campaigns on mutual respect, cultural awareness, and the importance of national symbols.

Football, MCC reiterated, is “a game of unity, love, and mutual respect.” The club called on its supporters and football fans across Africa to embrace these values, ensuring that sporting arenas remain spaces for peace, friendship, and cultural exchange.
As investigations progress, both Kenya Police FC and MCC are expected to turn their focus back to the pitch, with the return leg of their CAF Champions League tie anticipated to draw heightened security and scrutiny.
