The National Police Service (NPS) has released the names of the two police officers involved in the shocking shooting of a Nairobi street vendor, Boniface Mwangi Kariuki, during Tuesday’s protests in the Central Business District (CBD).

In an official statement issued on Wednesday, the NPS confirmed that the two officers—Police Constable Klinzy Barasa Masinde (Service No. 119413) and Police Constable Duncan Kiprono (Service No. 117193)—were identified from viral footage that captured them harassing and eventually shooting the unarmed vendor in broad daylight.

The statement, signed by Police Spokesperson Muchiri Nyaga, confirmed that both officers have since been interdicted and are now in the custody of the Homicide Team at the DCI Headquarters, where they are being processed pending further legal action.

The incident, which sparked public outrage nationwide, occurred as police dispersed demonstrators protesting the controversial death of another civilian in police custody.

In the video that circulated widely on social media, Boniface Kariuki is seen leaning calmly against a wall moments before being shot at close range with what appeared to be an anti-riot shotgun.

The police have also provided an update on the health status of Kariuki, who was rushed to Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH) immediately after the incident. He underwent emergency surgery and is now reported to be in stable condition and recovering well.

“The National Police Service deeply regrets this unjustified act and commiserates with the victim and his family, while reaffirming its full commitment to ensuring justice is served,” said Nyaga in the statement.

As investigations continue, pressure is mounting on law enforcement agencies and oversight bodies to ensure accountability and transparency in the handling of the case. Human rights organizations have also called for swift prosecution of the implicated officers and systemic reforms within the police service.

This incident has reignited national conversations around police brutality, especially in how officers respond to civilian protests and street-level enforcement.
