The National Police Service (NPS) has confirmed the arrest of a police officer involved in the shooting of an unarmed civilian during protests in Nairobi’s Central Business District (CBD) on Tuesday, June 17, 2025.
In an official statement issued by police spokesperson Muchi Nyaga, the NPS acknowledged the incident, which involved an officer discharging an anti-riot shotgun at a civilian during the ongoing demonstrations.
The victim, a street vendor reportedly selling masks near Moi Avenue, was shot and later rushed to hospital where he is currently receiving medical treatment.
“The National Police Service has noted with great concern, an incident involving the shooting of an unarmed civilian by a police officer using an anti-riot shotgun,” read the statement.
Following the disturbing incident, the Inspector-General of Police ordered the immediate arrest and arraignment of the officer involved. The officer has since been taken into custody as investigations continue.

In addition to condemning the shooting, the NPS also raised alarm over the presence of “a group of goons armed with crude weapons” who reportedly infiltrated the day’s demonstrations.
While reaffirming the right to peaceful protest, the NPS emphasized that unlawful behavior and armed groupings will be dealt with firmly in accordance with the law.
“The Service takes great exception and does not condone such unlawful groupings. Such individuals will be handled firmly, according to the law,” the statement continued.
The NPS reiterated its commitment to maintaining law and order while respecting human rights and called for calm as investigations into both the shooting and the presence of violent elements within the protest continue.
The incident has sparked public outrage, especially as tensions remain high following recent allegations of police brutality and the controversial death of blogger Albert Ojwang’ in police custody, which partly fueled today’s demonstrations.
