President William Ruto has expressed deep sorrow over the death of Albert Ojwang, who died while in police custody, and has called for a swift and transparent investigation into the incident.

In a strongly worded statement, the President urged the National Police Service (NPS) to act with urgency, not only in investigating the circumstances surrounding Ojwang’s death but also in addressing broader issues of misconduct and unprofessionalism within its ranks.

“The Service must therefore rise to the challenge of firmly dealing with crime and lawlessness, while also eradicating misconduct and unprofessional behaviour within its own ranks,” he said.

Ruto emphasized the need for full cooperation between the police and the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) to ensure justice is served. He insisted that any investigation into the matter must be swift, transparent, and credible.

Sharing his personal reaction, the President said he was deeply disturbed by the news:

“Like most Kenyans, and especially as a parent, I received the news of the death of Albert Ojwang while in police custody with utter shock and deep dismay.”

He extended his heartfelt condolences to Ojwang’s family, particularly his father, Mr. Meshack Ojwang, calling the death a “cruel loss” and describing the incident as both heartbreaking and unacceptable.

“I strongly condemn the actions and omissions, including any negligence or outright criminality, that may have contributed to his untimely death,” Ruto stated.

President William Ruto’s statement

He reminded members of the police service that they have a serious duty of care whenever an individual is placed in their custody. Protecting the safety and well-being of detainees, he said, must be treated as a solemn responsibility.

“The National Police Service is the nation’s trusted custodian of the security of all persons and property. They must always uphold this trust to maintain their legitimacy and credibility in the eyes of the people,” the President concluded.

Ojwang’s death has sparked public outcry and renewed scrutiny on police conduct in Kenya, with growing calls for accountability and reform within the security sector.
