President William Ruto has stirred excitement among football fans after announcing a historic cash incentive package for the Harambee Stars ahead of the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN), which Kenya is co-hosting alongside Uganda and Tanzania.
Speaking during a breakfast meeting with the national team at the Pullman Hotel in Nairobi, President Ruto pledged a whopping Ksh 600 million reward should the team go all the way and win the tournament. He further broke down the bonuses: Ksh 60 million will be awarded if the Stars reach the quarterfinals, and Ksh 70 million for making it to the semifinals.
On an individual level, the President also promised each player Ksh 1 million for every match they win and Ksh 500,000 for every draw.

These incentives are expected to boost team morale as they prepare for their opening fixture in Group A alongside formidable rivals DR Congo, Angola, Morocco, and Zambia.
President Ruto emphasized the importance of this moment in a post shared on his social platforms:
“CHAN 2024 is a moment for Kenya to shine. It’s our chance to showcase the talent of our players, the unity of our people, and the warmth of our hospitality as we proudly co-host this continental tournament. This month, there’s only one party: Harambee Stars and our slogan is ‘Stars Must Win’. Let’s turn out in large numbers and rally behind our national team as they push for victory.”

The Football Kenya Federation (FKF) welcomed the President’s support with open arms, stating:
“The Football Kenya Federation extends its sincere gratitude to His Excellency Dr William Samoei Ruto… His presence, alongside Sports Cabinet Secretary Salim Mvurya, Principal Secretary Elijah Mwangi, and other senior officials, was a strong show of support and encouragement to the team.”
With the financial motivation now on the table and national pride at stake, all eyes will be on the Harambee Stars as they aim to make history on home soil.
