Raila Odinga Honoured Through Emotional Mashujaa Day Performances in Kitui

Former Prime Minister Raila Odinga was remembered in powerful and emotional performances during the Mashujaa Day celebrations held at Ithookwe Stadium in Kitui.

The celebrations, which attracted hundreds of Kenyans, were filled with symbolic tributes that not only celebrated the nation’s heroes but also highlighted Raila’s enduring legacy as a champion of democracy, freedom, and social justice.

One of the most captivating moments came when a large group of schoolchildren, dressed in immaculate white outfits, took to the stadium grounds for a perfectly choreographed performance. Their graceful coordination quickly captured the crowd’s attention.

At one point, the children rearranged themselves to form an artistic display of the word “Shujaa”—a fitting symbol of the day’s theme. The performance then evolved into a more personal tribute. With white gloves and some waving white handkerchiefs, the children moved rhythmically across the field, forming the name “Raila” in bold letters for all to see.

The stadium erupted in applause as drone footage projected the stunning imagery onto giant screens, declaring “Shujaa Raila” in a breathtaking visual tribute to the fallen leader.

As the children’s formation dissolved, they broke into a solemn chant—“Raila wetu lala salama”—a heartfelt farewell to the late statesman who passed away just days before the national holiday. The stadium fell into a reverent silence as their young voices echoed through the grounds.

In another touching moment, the children recited a Swahili shairi (poem) written in Raila’s honor. The verses celebrated his lifelong struggle for freedom, equality, and justice, reminding Kenyans of the sacrifices he made—including years in detention—in pursuit of a democratic and just Kenya.

The tributes continued with an emotional interlude as Raila’s favorite Jamaican ballad, “Jamaica Farewell” by Harry Belafonte, played across the stadium’s screens. A video montage followed, showing the former Prime Minister himself singing the song in moments from his earlier life.

Adding to the emotion of the day, country music artist Kepha Oyugi Bwonda, popularly known as Pharry-K Cowboy045 from Kisii, performed a moving rendition of Farewell Jamaica in Raila’s honor, drawing warm applause from the crowd as the nostalgic tune filled the air.

The Mashujaa Day tributes came just a day after Raila’s burial, giving this year’s celebrations a deeper emotional meaning. While Mashujaa Day has always been a moment to celebrate Kenya’s national heroes, this year’s commemoration carried a special weight—honoring a man many consider one of the country’s greatest sons.
