Operations at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) were temporarily halted on Thursday following a major security breach during the arrival of the late former Prime Minister Raila Odinga’s remains.

In a statement, the Kenya Civil Aviation Authority (KCAA) confirmed that the suspension was necessitated after a large crowd of mourners forced their way into restricted areas of the airport.

“KCAA informs the public that operations at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport have been temporarily suspended due to an ongoing security situation following the arrival of the remains of the late Rt. Hon. Raila Odinga,” said Director General Emile Arao.

The authority emphasized that the closure was a precautionary measure to restore order and ensure the safety of both mourners and airport personnel.

KCAA further urged members of the public and travellers to remain calm and avoid the airport until normal operations resume. “KCAA regrets any inconvenience and appreciates the public’s understanding and cooperation,” Arao added.

A Notice to Airmen (NOTAM) was issued to inform all aviation stakeholders of the temporary suspension, with the authority projecting that operations would resume within two hours once security teams completed their assessment.

The remains of the late Raila Odinga arrived earlier in the day from India, where he passed away while receiving medical treatment.

His return to the country drew thousands of mourners who flocked to the airport and lined major roads across Nairobi to pay their last respects.

Crowds of supporters and boda boda riders reportedly breached security at the State Pavilion, disrupting the official reception ceremony. Security officers briefly lost control as emotional supporters surged forward to catch a glimpse of the hearse carrying Raila’s casket.

Despite efforts by the military and GSU officers to contain the situation, many mourners pushed through barricades while others climbed over the perimeter wall, chanting Raila’s name and waving twigs in solidarity.

The boda boda riders who gained access to restricted areas further complicated the situation, overwhelming the officers on duty.

However, the mood remained largely peaceful, with mourners breaking into songs and chants of Raila’s famous slogans, “Jowie!”, as the casket was received.

Security agencies later managed to restore calm, allowing the official procession to continue to the Lee Funeral Home. The convoy is currently making its way from JKIA along Mombasa Road, ahead of the planned public viewing at Parliament Buildings.
