Ugandan Police Force has issued a clarification over the alleged shooting of Opposition politician Robert Kyagulanyi aka Bobi Wine.
The police denied claims that an officer shot and injured Bobi Wine.
The UPF said Bobi Wine stumbled while getting into his car and sustained an injury, which his team claims is from a gunshot.
They explained that Bobi Wine had on Tuesday attended a thanksgiving ceremony in Bulindo, Kiira Municipality, Wakiso District and after the ceremony ended, he left and embarked on a procession to Bulindo town.
UPF said it had advised against the procession, but Bobi Wine insisted on proceeding and closing the road, leading to police intervention to prevent the procession.
“During the ensuing altercation, it is alleged that he sustained injuries. Police officers on site claim he stumbled while getting into his vehicle, causing the injury, whereas Hon Kyagulanyi and his team assert that he was shot,” police said.
The UPF said an investigation will be conducted to clarify the facts.
“The police will investigate the alleged shooting and any related incidents,” UPF said.
On Tuesday, his social handle administrator said that Bobi Wine was receiving treatment at a hospital after he was shot.
Wine’s admin further promised to share more information on his health.
“Our President Bobi Wine has been shot in the leg by police in Bulindo! He’s been rushed to hospital for urgent medical attention. We’ll keep the country updated on his situation,” the statement on X read.
